Vashishti River

Vashisthi River is regarded as largest rivers and it is originating through western part of western ghat. Boating is one of the pleasant sports and this is enjoyed through many people. You would also get to see the crocodiles and enjoy fishing as well.

 

It would be staring from western ghat and river would be flowing through westward and then it would be reaching into Arabian Sea and that is at Dabhol. There are numerous tributaries and that would be joining the river and you can check out some of the other places as well. There are numerous riverine islands that could be seen near this river and town chiplun is also present on river banks.

This is one of the five rivers and it would be originating through Mahabaleshwar and it is present in Maharashtra state. It would be flowing from Raigad district and then it would be meeting in Arabian Sea and that is at the Harehareshwar. It would be passing through Mangaon, Poladpur, Shrivardhan taluks and Mahad. There are ample of Shiva temples and all of them are located on Savitri river banks. It is approximately 100 ms and it is present between Ratnagiri and Raigad.

 

Patalganga River

Patalganga River would be rising through western scraps and it would be present in Matheran uplands and then it would be branching off through main ridge and that is present near to the Khopoli and it would be maintaining the general westward floe and then it would join Dharamatar creek and that is the wide estuary. Khopoli is a power project and its water is let into the adjacent rivers.

 

Course

 

This Patalganga River is one of the major sources of Khandala portion and it would be flowing in north and west direction in 25 miles. There are numerous other streams that would be present on side drain and they are much eroded and they are marked through hill features and they are the prominent ones. In its south, you would get to view the Manikgarh and this would be forming the steep range and that is in North West and south east trend. The fact is that it is a hill projection along with a plateau complex and it would be separating Balganga and Patalganga drainage. Down the Waveshwar, this would be changing its direction and it would be altering the stretch of 20 miles. According to the topography available, this river valley is very broad and it would be getting merged in Dharamtar creek tidal flats. Balganga is one of its tributary streams and it would be flowing in the parallel direction especially in hilly areas and then it would be joining the Patalganga. The land is very hilly and ranges such as Badruddin and Shillote is very low in height.

 

Ulhas River

Ulhas River is one of the rivers that would be flowing in Indian western part and it would be arising in Sahyadris foothills and it would be start its flow in western direction. It would be entering into Thane as well as Raigad district and they are present between Badlapur and Kulgaon districts. This river would be turning in western direction and that is towards Thane and channels would be connecting it.

 

Course

 

In its course, it would be meeting with River Barvi and that would be discharge point for Barvi Dam. This is one of the tourist’s spots as well as fishing spots too. Thane River would be separating it into 2 parts and its 1 branch would be flowing in western direction and its other branch would be flowing in south direction. It is present around the Salsette Island and it is the place where Mumbai city is present. These 2 branches are present on the seismic line and they are very estuarine. This river would be getting turned in the northern direction and then it would be getting opened into Vasai Creek. Thane creek would be flowing in the southern direction and then it would be getting emptied in Bombay Harbor. It is known for numerous spots and that is Shurparaka, Kalyan and Kopri. Its significant tributaries are- Bhatsa, Kalu and Bharvi rivers.

 

Mithi River or Mahim River

This Mithi River is known by the name of Mahim river and it is situated at Salsette Island and this is the place where Mumbai city is located. River is the combination of Tail Island and that has been discharged through Vihar and Powai Lakes. It is regarded as the seasonal river and this would be feeding in monsoons. It would be arising through valley and that is located adjacent to Sanjay Gandhi Park and then it would be getting merged in Arabian Sea and that is present at the Mahim Creek.

 

Course

 

In its course, this river would be flowing from industrial and residential complexes and that includes Saki Naka, Bandra-Kurla, Kurla, Powai, Vakola, and complex, Kalina, Mahim and Dharavi. This river is very narrower and it is approximately 10 meters and it would be get widened up gradually and this river is having the length of 14 kms. This Mahim bay is the area where Mithi River would be getting merged with Arabian Sea and then it would be named as Salim Bird Ali Sanctuary. In fact, ample of migratory birds would be visiting in this area and construction of dam has been along Vihar lake upstream side. It is one of the natural channels of drainage and that would be carrying surplus waters in monsoon.

 

Oshiwara River

Oshiwara River is one of the rivers that are situated in Mumbai, India. It would be originating through Aarey Milk colony and then it would be getting cut into Goregaon hills and that is present across Milk colony and this would happen before getting emptied into Malad creek. In its way, it would be getting joined through road of Swami Vivekanand and then only it would pick up the sewage and industrial effluents.

 

This is a much polluted river and it is having encroachments and that would be getting shrunk to narrow stream. There are numerous call centres and they have been constructed through reclaimed ground in river mouths. Numerous efforts have been done through which this river can be cleaned up and the steps were taken after Maharashtra flood 2005. There are numerous proposals that would be converting the waterway into barges and they would be setting up various farms on banks and it would also introduce biogas plant and that would be converting waste into the energy. It is imperative that this river would have to suffer the miserable death and one of the prominent reasons is that it is being spilled by the Industrial wastes.

 

Dahisar River

Dahisar River is present on the Salsette Island and it would be running through the Dahisar and this is one of the Mumbai suburbs. It would be originating through Tulsi Lake and that is present at Sanjay Gandhi Park. This river would be flowing in the North West direction for approximatelt 12 kms and that would be occupying the Krishna nagar, Dahisar Gaothan, Sanjay Nagar, Kandar Pada and Leprosy Colony localities and then only it would be meeting up in Arabian Sea through the Manori creek. It would be having the catchment area of 3480 hectares. There was an era when this river was a lot picturesque and numerous Hindi movies got shot here. Until 1960’s this area was crowded through crocodiles, but now this river is polluted to a larger extent. It started becoming shallower and this is mainly because of the silt accumulation, plastic bags and debris.

 

Vaitarna River

Vaitarna has been mentioned in Garuda Purana and various other religious texts and it is also present within infernal world and earth. It is a common belief that it is used for purification of sins and all your soulful sins would be crossed after they have crossed this river. It would be falling on the path that would be leading in Yama southern city and one of the biggest facts is that all the souls would be coming to life through southern gate.

 

There are numerous other texts such as Harihareshwara Mahatmya and they have mentioned that this river would be joined in the eastern ocean and whoever would have taken the bath here, would be free from all the sins.

 

This was first appeared in Mahabharat and that was its pilgrimage episode. It is mentioned that it would be rising through Vindhyas and then it would be falling in Bay of Bengal and then it would get passed through Baitarani river. It has also appeared in Matsya Purana along with the Vamana Purana and that completely reveals Vaitarani etymologu and there it has been defined through tarini. Moreover, it is also having the equivalence to Styx river and that is present in the Greek mythology and it is having close association to Vaitarani Vrata and that was observed on 11th day and this is done mainly in the dark phase and it should be in accordance with the Hindu calendar and here only the cow would be worshipped and it is donated as well.
